Overview of Programs

Critical Research Initiatives
The Critical Research Initiatives Program provides funds which are primarily aimed at facilitating the exploration of ideas or the formation of collaborations that may help to open new fields, enhance the research environment of the campus, and/or lead to support from other sources.

Research Board
The Research Board provides support for individual or group research projects. This support is intended to help promising new faculty initiate their research on this campus; provide seed money for research in new directions; provide support for preliminary studies to improve the potential for attracting external research support; provide modest resources for important research in fields for which external support is either quite limited or unavailable; and, provide matching funds sometimes required by external sponsors.

Scholars Travel Fund
The Scholars' Travel Fund is a Research Board program designed to provide travel support to faculty members in specifically targeted areas to present original papers at scholarly meetings.

Research Scholars' Program
The Research Scholars' Program was established in 1984 by the Graduate College, through the Campus Research Board. It was established to assist academically qualified members of dual-career couples to continue their research, scholarship, and creative activity in an academic environment. The program is part of the campus effort to address the problems in recruiting and retaining highly qualified faculty and staff caused by limited local career opportunities for dual-career couples.

Recruitment and Retention
The financial assistance required to help new faculty establish their research programs varies widely depending upon the discipline and the seniority of the researcher. The Research Board accepts requests to initiate research programs from new faculty who have already accepted positions on the campus. Retention funds can also be provided in those cases where extraordinary expenditures are required to retain a valued faculty member.
